4 Signs of AC Damage After a Storm

While newer models of air conditioning systems are designed to withstand  harsh weather conditions, they’re not immune to damage caused by severe storms. Here, trusted heating and air conditioning technicians reveal four common signs of damage to your air conditioning unit that you need to look out for after a storm.

Unusual noises. Torrential rain and strong winds can cause dirt and debris to get caught up in your outdoor unit. If you hear screeching, rattling or buzzing sounds coming from your equipment, take this as a red flag and have it inspected immediately by a technician. If the needed repairs are completed in a timely manner, you won’t have to worry about more serious damage down the road.

Physical damage. It’s not hard to imagine how an extreme storm can inflict physical damage on your air conditioner’s outdoor unit. Common effects include disconnected electrical wires, damaged condenser coils and a displaced condenser unit. Dirt can also collect on the cooling fans, which will prevent the proper circulation of air in your house.

A burning odor. If left unchecked, a burning smell coming from your air conditioner can mean deep trouble. Most times, this is the smell of burning wires caused by power surges during a storm. If you’re in the middle of a storm and a power surge occurs, the best thing to do is shut off your HVAC system. Later on, you can let a professional inspect your unit to save you on future repairs.

Pooling water. Your air conditioner’s outdoor unit shouldn’t be submerged in water for an extended period of time. If you see rainwater pooling around your unit, turn it off at the circuit breaker to prevent damaging its electrical components. Be sure to also address the drainage issue to avoid other water-related problems in the future.
